In today’s fast-paced world, many parents are on a quest for effective ways to engage their kids while promoting emotional well-being. We helped one Mum, Emma, find a unique approach that combines nature-based learning activities with fun and exploration. This not only calmed her kids but also ignited their curiosity and creativity.
Emma noticed that her two children, aged five and eight, often came home from school feeling stressed, dysregulated and restless, she wondered if she could find an effective calming method to regulate their hyperactivity.
The Power of Nature
We shared information with Emma that nature holds a remarkable ability to calm the mind and improve emotional and brain health. Here is the proof:
Stress reduction: A 2019 study published in Frontiers in Psychology found that 20 minutes of nature exposure can significantly reduce stress hormone levels. The study participants were free to choose their own time, place, and duration of nature exposure.
Heart rate reduction: A systematic review found that nature exposure can decrease heart rate.
ADHD concentration: A 20-minute walk in nature can help children with ADHD concentrate better.
Wellbeing: Research suggests that early experiences with nature are important for developing a child's relationship with nature, which can continue into later life.
Creativity and imagination: Time spent in nature can promote creativity and imagination in children.
We suggested that Emma schedule space to be with her children for at least 40 mins after school and establish a routine. She and her kids decided to trial going to either a local nature reserve or the local beach for at least 20 minutes each week day, allowing 20 minutes travel time. Both Emma and the kids enjoyed the fresh air, the sounds of chirping birds, and the rustling leaves, or, enjoyed time swimming and playing at the beach. Outdoor time turned into a family ritual that everyone not only eagerly anticipated, they all had vastly improved behaviours and many more positive outcomes.

Simple Activities to Get Started
Each week we will share more simple, nature-based activities that will help you as a family to build a huge activity box that can engage your kids, help you monitor and de-escalate technology use and reconnect vital family ties.
The Results: A Playful Transformation
Since introducing the first few nature-based learning activities, Emma has observed a noticeable transformation in her children's behaviour. They have become calmer, able to focus attention, and more connected to their environment and each other. These activities provide not only effective calming tips but also create treasured memories that Emma feels her and her kids will hold dear for years.
The beauty of nature-based learning lies in its accessibility; there is no need for expensive materials or complex setups. A sprinkle of creativity combined with a willingness to create specific time for this play as well as step outside is all it takes.
A Ripple Effect
Not only have Emma's kids benefitted, but she has experienced positive changes in her own mood and well-being. The time spent outdoors together has deepened their bond and created a supportive environment in which to connect and have conversations. Emma also realised that prioritising these 40 minutes with her kids not only fulfilled one of her main values, family, it also helped her realise that she could take charge of her life by confidently voicing her decision to fit that priority into her busy schedule.
Mums looking for ways to calm their kids can take inspiration from Emma's story. Nature offers endless opportunities for exploration, education, and emotional relief.
